1.In 2017 the ways in which humans interact with technology will be significantly altered, as mobile devices will be able to perform machine learning tasks even without connectivity, according to Deloitte’s 2017 Canadian Technology, Media & Telecommunications (TMT) Predictions. Within the next 12 months, it is predicted that in Canada over 3 million smartphones, or over a third of phones sold in the year will have machine learning capabilities within the device. Over time, these capabilities are also likely to be found in tens of millions (or more) of drones, tablets, cars, virtual or augmented reality devices, medical tools, Internet of Things (IoT) devices and unforeseen new technologies.

2.Initial market reactions to the unexpected election outcome in the United States have indicated improved prospects for banks and capital markets firms in 2017. However, ongoing structural changes are likely to continue in the form of new operating models and investments in emerging technologies for greater efficiencies and competitiveness. Meanwhile, banks and capital markets firms are expected to deepen their engagement with the fintech ecosystem as the trend towards digitization accelerates.
3.Medical tourism is an emerging global trend, one that has already taken root in Canada, but for which the future is still unclear. Over the past five years, Canadian governments have reduced the volume of insured medical services purchased out-of-country, but the costs of these services have more than doubled. At the same time, anecdotal reports suggest that Canadians are privately purchasing cosmetic and elective services at an increasing rate, though little data is available.
Adding to the emerging state of medical tourism in Canada is growing policy and public attention to wait lists for key services, increasing consumer willingness to travel for health care services, and renewed direct-to-consumer marketing by medical tourism companies and foreign destinations. This growth presents opportunities for increased medical tourism in Canada – both for Canadians seeking care abroad and for establishing Canada as a medical tourism destination – and sets the stage for renewed focus on this health care trend by Canadian governments, providers and consumers.
