The first half of 2016 presented the ideal environment for gold stocks to flourish and high prices provided a refuge for investors in times of global uncertainty.With an aggregated market capitalisation of $20.6bn, the MT50 gold miners have experienced an unparalleled 158% uplift in value since 2015 and now accounts for 23 companies – almost half of the MT50.
In times of uncertainty, gold is a refuge for investors, and 2016 has been no exception. Wavering investor confidence in the current macroeconomic environment has been a boon for gold miners. 2016 has proven to be a tumultuous year on the global stage.
2.In recent decades, Governments around Australia have embraced privatisation – selling government-owned assets and businesses and using the capital raised to either pay down debt or recycle the proceeds into new public infrastructure. Yet the issue of privatisation is often seen as a contentious one, and has on occasion divided communities and political opinion.
A good example is the currently proposed privatisation of Western Australia’s electricity networks – which has been estimated to raise up to $16bn for the State Government if fully privatised. There have been many questions raised about whether this is necessary and what the implications will be.
