1.Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of arteries. Blood pressure is recorded as two numbers—the systolic pressure over the diastolic pressure . The measurement is written one above or before the other, with the systolic number on top and the diastolic number on the bottom. For example, a blood pressure measurement of 120/80 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury) is expressed verbally as “120 over 80.”Normal blood pressure is less than 120 mm Hg systolic and less than 80 mm Hg diastolic.

2.Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer in America. About 700,000 Americans died last year of CVD, accounting for over 29% of all deaths.Lack of physical activity is clearly shown to be a risk factor for coronary heart disease.The relative risk of coronary heart disease associated with physical inactivity ranges from 1.5 to 2.4, an increase in risk comparable with that observed for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and cigarette smoking.Less active, less fit persons have a 30–50% greater risk of developing high blood pressure.

4.When you go to school, you want to be at the top of your game so you can stay alert and perform well. Eating a healthy lunch and snacks will help fuel your brain and body. But putting together healthy lunches and snacks can be surprisingly difficult and time consuming. It’s certainly much easier to bring pre-packaged snacks and lunches to school. These options, however, are often filled with saturated fats, sodium, and sugar—all things that you should avoid.

5.All children are born with the enzyme lactase, which allows them to digest milk, but by the age of ten many children of non-European descent no longer produce the enzyme. 6.Once upon a time, we didn’t know anything about fat except that it made foods tastier. We cooked our food in lard or shortening. We spread butter on our breakfast toast and plopped sour cream on our baked potatoes. Farmers bred their animals to produce milk with high butterfat content and meat “marbled” with fat because that was what most people wanted to eat.But ever since word got out that diets high in fat are related to heart disease, things have become more complicated.

7.Food-borne illness often shows itself as flu-like symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever, so many people may not recognize the illness is caused by bacteria or other pathogens on food.Thousands of types of bacteria are naturally present in our environment. 8.When your cell phone runs low on power, you plug it in. Electricity is your phone’s source of energy. People need energy, too, but we can’t simply plug ourselves in to get it. Instead, we need food to fuel our bodies. Not all foods, however, give us the same energy. Some foods provide energy to think, form memories, and perform physical activities, while others only slow us down. The key is learning how to make the right decisions when choosing what to eat.
