1.The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Average Weekly Earnings survey is designed to measure the level of average earnings in Australia at a point in time. Movements in average weekly earnings can be affected by changes in both the level of earnings per employee and in the composition of the labour force. Factors which can contribute to compositional change include variations in the proportion of full-time, part-time, casual and junior employees; variations in the occupational distribution within and across industries; and variations in the distribution of employment between industries.

2.Kirsty Parkes, Acting Director of Health and Vital Statistics, said that since 1995, the age at which people have first married has increased by around three years.

“Age at first marriage stabilised between 2005 and 2009, but since then has steadily increased. As a result, grooms preparing for their first marriage are now on average 30.1 years of age, while brides are likely to be a shade younger at 28.5 years of age,” said Ms Parkes.

“The age of divorcees is also at a record high, now more than five years older on average than they were 20 years ago.

3.The proportion of Australia’s population aged 65 years and over has increased in 2016, continuing a trend of the last two decades, according to the latest figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).ABS Demography Director Beidar Cho said that the percentage of the population aged 65 years and over has increased from 12.0 per cent in 1996 to 15.3 per cent in 2016.

4.Businesses with 5-19 persons employed were the most likely to have reported using software as a cloud computing service in 2013-14 (92%). While businesses with 200 or more persons employed recorded the highest proportion to have used processing power to run own software (29%) and storage capacity (73%).

5.Health care and social assistance recorded the highest proportion of businesses to have used software (93%). The Professional, scientific and technical services industry had the highest proportion of businesses to use processing power to run own software (18%), while Information media and telecommunications had the highest proportion to use storage capacity (74%)

6.The quarterly trend underemployment rate remained at 8.5 per cent for a third successive quarter. “The underemployment rate is still at a historically high level for Australia, but has been relatively unchanged over the past two years.Trend series smooth the more volatile seasonally adjusted estimates and provide the best measure of the underlying behaviour of the labour market.
