PTE Academic writing summarize written text practice exercise. Read the passage below and summarize it using one sentence. Type your response in the comment section at the bottom of the screen. You have 10 minutes to finish this task. Your response will be judged on the quality of your writing and on how well your response presents the key points in the passage.
1.Eleven countries bordering the Indian Ocean—all relatively poor and vulnerable—suffered devastation after tsunami hit Indian ocean. Hardest hit were Indonesia , Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and the Maldives. The catastrophic damage included the destruction of entire cities, the contamination of farmland and forests, and the depletion of fishing stocks. Some areas faced starvation and increased susceptibility to disease. Even countries with relatively low death tolls suffered enormous damage—the Maldives, for example, had less than 100 deaths, yet the tsunami left 14 of the archipelago’s islands uninhabitable, requiring its inhabitants to be permanently evacuated, and another 79 islands without safe drinking water.
2.Fats are a group of chemical compounds that contain fatty acids. Energy is stored in the body mostly in the form of fat. Fat is needed in the diet to supply essential fatty acids, substances essential for growth but not produced by the body itself.
There are three main types of fatty acids: saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. All fatty acids are molecules composed mostly of carbon and hydrogen atoms. A saturated fatty acid has the maximum possible number of hydrogen atoms attached to every carbon atom. It is therefore said to be “saturated” with hydrogen atoms.
3.Some people don’t want to eat food that has been sprayed with pesticides. Nor do they want genetically modified food . What’s the alternative? Organic food. For a food to be certified as organic by the government, it must be grown without artificial pesticides and fertilizers. Milk, meat, poultry and eggs are designated as organic if they are not treated with hormones or antibiotics. (Hormones make animals larger; antibiotics keep them disease-free.) In addition, food can’t be labeled organic if it is genetically altered or irradiated (processed with radiation to kill harmful germs). Organic foods are often more expensive than regular foods, but some people think the more natural products are worth the extra money.
4.For thousands of years, farmers have improved their crops by crossbreeding plants that have good traits. They take pollen from one plant and add it to the flowers of another plant to produce a plant with the traits they want. But cross-breeding is slow and unreliable.
Scientists say the new techniques have created crops that are pest-proof, disease resistant and more nutritious. For example, a rice has been modified so it gets an extra boost of vitamin A from a daffodil gene. The rice was made for those who don’t get enough vitamin A in their diet.
Not everybody thinks bioengineering is a good idea. Many people say these genetically modified, or GM, foods may end up harming the environment and humans. They fear that plants with new genes forced into them will accidentally crossbreed with wild plants and create pesticide-resistant superweeds. They also say GM foods could carry genes that trigger allergies or other side effects.
So far, GM foods haven’t harmed anyone. Most genetic researchers believe that if troubles do crop up, they will be manageable.
