Some people think that keeping pets is good for children while others think it is dangerous and unhealthy. Which opinion do you agree with? Discuss both options and give examples.
Pets are fast becoming an important member of many families in today’s time. In this essay, I will elucidate how keeping pets for one’s children can be extremely beneficial for them.Critics argue that pets can pose a serious threat to the safety of the family members especially, a child. A child is defenseless and hence, is extremely vulnerable. They further argue that as they are animals, they lack basic human care and understanding.
However, these concerns are nothing more than myths. The following reasons demonstrate why owning pets can be beneficial for the children-
They are protective – Pets are very protective of their loved ones especially, their caretakers. They easily develop strong bonds of love and care for people who show them love. In the case of a child, a pet always looks out for them, even in the absence of the guardian. Pets are more trustable than human beings themselves. Unlike people who have greed and hate towards ones the close to them, animals harbour no such malice.
Development of social skills – Children who grow up with pets have better social skills of communication, sharing, and responsibility. This can partly be credited to the boost in self-esteem and a reduction in stress and anxiety levels. Children befriend pets and hence, share the tiniest details of their lives without the fear of being judged. This is why children suffering from a physical handicap or mental illnesses like PTSD are advised to get a pet.
More physical activity – Animals encourage physical vitality in children. A child with a pet is always active, chirpy and quick. The reason is that animals are active beings who instill the same values in children around them from an early age.
Boosts Immunity to diseases – Children who own pets are exposed to bacteria which the animals carry. Researchers found that kids who have grown up with animals are immune to allergies and skin infections than kids who haven’t.
To sum up, pets have a positive influence on children. It is important that a child grows up with one, in order for good values to be instilled in him/her.
