PTE Essay-Xenophobia has accelerated rapidly in the Western countries

Xenophobia has accelerated rapidly in the Western countries. According to you what solutions can be proposed by the government and individuals?

Model Answer-

Xenophobia is the mental condition in which a person has a strong aversion from strangers or foreigners and this sometimes results in violence. In many countries, racism and xenophobia are buried in the deep valley, but recently the number of such incidents have risen in western countries in the form of hate crime. In my opinion, both the government and individuals should work together to curb Xenophobia.

The ideas of xenophobia have become so deeply ingrained in many people’s minds, making it a challenge to completely eliminate these harmful doctrines, however. Children, who are inclined to imitate whatever the acts of their parents, are likely to internalize or adopt a system of spurious beliefs if their parents’ faiths are erroneous, thus they grow up with racial stereotypes thereafter. Nevertheless, I believe that problems arising from xenophobia and racism can be and will be resolved eventually, as South African president Nelson Mandela had declared: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” If racist and xenophobic attitudes are alterable, then it is our duty to proactively annihilate them by openly addressing and discussing the issues emerged so that further incidents can be prevented, and by spreading the message of love, peace, and universal brotherhood, rather than hatred and hostility.

On the other hand, the government should organize awareness programs and educate its citizens about different cultures, races, and ethnicity. Secondly, the government can encourage student-exchange programs where students from one country/race/community would shift to a different environment and for a temporary period would accept the difference. This would make the people sensitive towards the desires of each other and broaden the thinking. The government can also introduce more awards like the Nobel Peace Prize that can motivate people to work towards unity and not hatred.

Moreover, people should travel around the world, discovering new cultures and new people from the different country so that they judge the people from their real characteristics, rather than just judge all the people of a country in the same way. Xenophobia now is a tough war to beat but together we all can make a difference and make our world a happy place.

  1. Xenophobia is a term used to describe extreme hate for culture and faith. It has its own ramifications. People living in Western countries are more likely becoming a victim of this trend. Segregating aliens in the society is detrimental for local society dwelling for centuries.
In this essay, I will highlight recent trends of exacerbating in Western societies, which in the long term is likely to trigger more segregation than cohesion.
Firstly, take a holistic view of the whole situation in Western societies. Declining jobs and businesses experiencing downslide is an apparent reason for this unjust trend. Local or indigenous people are constructing the narrative that local jobs are being filled up by the aliens. Similarly, delayed health treatments and non-availability of the prompt welfare system is adding to this narrative that aliens are exploiting loopholes of the welfare system. Above all, aliens migrating to such countries are practicing their own cultures and customs thus making them vulnerable to indigenous people. As a result, hate related crimes are on the rise. A recent example of this trend is prompt support of right-wing parties before the electorate in recent elections in France and Portugal where this divide is widening to an alarming level. Brexit is yet another example of this trend whereby people in England decided to divorce decades-long partnership with the European Union. In Britain, talks are underway to part ways from the Union. All these events combined together have led to hate or race-related assaults in Britain.
With that being said, race-related crimes can be mitigated by two pronged strategies. Educating young liberals in the society is the main-pillar of this strategy. Media outlets such as BBC, CNN, Fox News can trigger pluralistic talks in their airtime. People participating in these talk-shows must comprise of both majority and minority groups. This would not only end the conflict between two major groups but will foster the cohesion between people of different background, cast, creed, and cultures.
Looking into this strategy on how to improve race-relations and foster cohesion among various segments of society, Government also needs to be proactive to institutionalize these efforts. This can be done by appointing a full-time Government Official (Watchdog) that would not only stamp out differences between communities but would also act as a strong negotiator between different cultural units.
To wrap up while the problems of race-related crimes in Western societies are making everyday headlines, nonetheless, through concerted efforts both by state and the intra-community dialogue this trend can be discouraged for societies to live peacefully.

  3. Xenophobia is associated with the condition of the mind that visualizes foreign people and cultures to be in a bad light. This condition often originates from the immediate family’s mindset, especially the elders and also from one’s own culture and traditions. This menace is more prominent in the west and only a collective effort by the individuals, society and governments can control it.

Firstly it needs to be recognized by the elders of the family about the xnenophobic mindset that prevails amongst them as it would be a first step towards bringing this evil to an end. They should exercise caution before they ill speak about foreign individuals, faiths, and cultures. Being aware of the harm it may cause to foreign people would bring about a realization to bring it to an end.

Secondly, the society and the government can play a very important role to reduce this practice. Societies can spread awareness among the people by means of organizing various awareness campaigns, educating people by means of plays or by distributing pamphlets. Similarly governments can introduce new laws to deter this evil practice and at the same time take measures and ensure that those laws are implemented and subjecting the offenders to some harsh punishments thereby bringing about a deterrence and transformation of the individuals and society as a whole.

To conclude, the role of society would eventually be determined by the role of individuals collectively participating to bring an end to it, but the government would need to enforce by enacting new laws and handing out stricter punishments.

Hence, the results of these strategies, pursue the people to hate strangers and to commit a crime. Nevertheless, I believe that the problem can be solved, eventually, as the Nelson Mandela president, of South Africa has declared, no one is born to hate others, to hate his culture and to hate his religion. therefore, the problem of xenophobia can be mitigated through love, prosperity and be giving equal opportunities to all.
